Submit your case study about the care, education, and self-management of diabetes involving the use of flash glucose monitoring and LibreView and the ambulatory glucose profile (AGP) report for your chance to win a share of $5,000 in scholarship prizes, including $3,000 for first prize.

 

You’ll also go into the draw to receive a full registration to the Australasian Diabetes Congress (ADC), International Diabetes Federation – Western Pacific Region (IDF-WPR) and Metabolic Diseases 2026, a joint international event and one of Australia’s largest diabetes conferences. Your case study could be featured in the Abbott FreeStyle Case Study booklet, a prominent publication that will be printed and showcased at the congress.

Criteria for case study submissions

Each case study should address the following:

  • How have the client’s clinical diabetes outcomes improved with this technology?

  • How has the technology impacted the client’s quality of life? 

  • How has this technology changed the practice of an individual health professional or the diabetes care team?

  • How has this technology helped prevent an adverse clinical event?

  • What challenges have clients faced with this technology, and what has been done to address them?

  • Discuss how LibreView reports have been used to inform diabetes management changes and the effectiveness of them to increase time in range.

  • How has the FreeStyle Libre CGM helped facilitate “freestyle living” with diabetes? 

  • When clinically relevant, case study authors are encouraged to reference the use of the NovoPen 6 with the LibreLink App

Format and submission

Case studies should reflect principles of person-centred care and adhere to the Diabetes Australia language position statement and the Reconciliation Australia language guide when discussing the use of flash glucose monitoring and LibreView that incorporate the AGP report.

Selection process

Judges’ Choice Award
Round one: selected by a reviewing panel

  1. Reviewers will select the top 10 winning case studies for publication.

  2. Among these 10, authors of the top four will be invited to round two (to be eligible for round two, you must be available to present in person at ADC, IDF-WPR, and Metabolic Diseases 2026).

Round two: the Judges’ Choice Award will be selected by delegates at the ADC, IDF-WPR, and Metabolic Diseases 2026.

  1. The top four candidates will be invited to present their case studies orally at ADC, IDF-WPR, and Metabolic Diseases 2026.

  2. Delegates will vote on the quality of presentations and the criteria being met. Case study winners will be ranked and presented 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th for the Judges' Choice Awards.

 
Early Career Award

  • One entrant will be selected for the Early Career Award and invited to present their case study at ADC, IDF-WPR, and Metabolic Diseases 2026.

  • Entrant must be an active Full Member of ADEA.

  • Entrant must have less than 2 years’ experience as a CDE or be working towards initial credentialling.

  • Entrant must not have entered the Abbott Case Study Competition previously.

Prize structure

Top 10

  • Full registration to attend ADC, IDF-WPR, and Metabolic Diseases 2026.

  • Publication in the Abbott FreeStyle Case Study booklet

Judges’ Choice Award

  • First prize: $3,000 scholarship to attend professional development activities.

  • Second prize: $500 scholarship to attend professional development activities.

  • Third prize: $300 scholarship to attend professional development activities.

  • Fourth prize: $200 scholarship to attend professional development activities.

Early Career Award

  • Full registration to attend ADC, IDF-WPR, and Metabolic Diseases 2026.

  • $1,000 scholarship to undertake professional development activities.

  • Case study to be published in The Australian Diabetes Educator Publication.

Consent process

Applicants must obtain written consent from people living with diabetes discussed in the submitted case studies, giving permission that they are happy for the selected case studies to be published via print and/or online by ADEA.

​​​​Terms and conditions 

  1. Submitted case studies must include any principle(s) of person-centred care and the Diabetes Australia Position Statement: Our Language Matters while answering the identified questions.

  2. All written case studies must be completed using the Microsoft Word template and submitted to education@adea.com.au with FREESTYLE LIVING WITH DIABETES: LEARNING FROM CASE STUDIES in the subject line. Any part of a submitted case study that exceeds the word limit (i.e. from the 1501st word onward) will not be considered.

  3. Submitted case studies must de-identify all details of the client to ensure confidentiality. This means no names, initials, or specific locations should be included in the submission. For example, use general descriptions such as: "A 32-year-old woman with newly diagnosed type 1 diabetes attended our health service for …".

  4. Applicants must obtain consent of people with diabetes discussed in the submitted case studies, giving permission that they are happy for the selected case studies to be published via print and/or online by ADEA. Submitted case studies without matching consents will not be reviewed.

  5. Submitted case studies must follow Vancouver referencing style.

  6. Authors of the top 10 ranked case studies will receive one registration per case study for the 2026 IDF/Australasian Diabetes Congress (ADC), financially supported by Abbott Diabetes Care.

  7. Authors who submit a case study must be prepared to attend and present at ADC 2026, should they reach the final 10 and the final 4 for oral presentations or win the Early Career category. You will be ineligible for top 4 placing or winning the Early Career category if you are unable to attend IDF/ADC 2026 in-person.

  8. Winner of the Abbott Case Study Competition may have their case study published in the Australian Diabetes Educator.

  9. Members of the Reviewing Panel and members of the Abbott Libre Advisory Committee are not eligible for this competition.

  10. Any adverse events experienced by health professionals or people with diabetes should be reported through to Abbott Diabetes Care’s customer service.

The competition is managed and facilitated by ADEA based on consultation with a review panel of experienced endocrinologists and CDEs. Abbott financially supports this program.
