National Diabetes Week 2025

 13 – 19 July 2025

National Diabetes Week 2024

During National Diabetes Week 2024, ADEA  collaborated with Diabetes Australia and the Australian Diabetes Society (ADS) to develop a position statement advocating for equitable access to diabetes technology.

Policy Statement development:

ADEA contributed to the development of a policy paper released by Diabetes Australia, which outlines steps to improve access to diabetes technology.

Advocacy:

Our policy paper calls for government investment and policy changes to make diabetes technologies more affordable and accessible  which include the following:

  • Expanding Medicare item numbers to cover health professionals, including CDEs, for initiating and supporting people living with diabetes and using CGM devices.

  • Increasing the number of visits to CDEs for people living with diabetes.

National Diabetes Week 2023 united the diabetes community in a nationwide conversation, advocating for a better future for those living with diabetes. A key part of this was Diabetes Australia's debate series, featuring CDEs and experts discussing critical topics like inadequate Medicare funding for diabetes care and the essential role of CDEs in technology adoption. These discussions aimed to raise awareness and drive meaningful change for people living with diabetes.

National Diabetes Week 2022, held from 10 July to 16 July, focused on the crucial theme of emotional health and well-being for people living with diabetes. ADEA, in collaboration with partners, hosted events such as a panel discussion on managing diabetes with competing mental health priorities, and a presentation differentiating between diabetes distress, burnout, and depression. These initiatives aimed to raise awareness and equip health professionals with insights into supporting the emotional aspects of diabetes care.

National Diabetes Week 2021, running from 11 July to 18 July, urgently addressed the pervasive issue of diabetes stigma.

Led by ADEA and its partners, the campaign aimed to amplify voices against the blame and judgment often faced by people living with diabetes, which acts as a significant barrier to effective self-care.

Resources, including a podcast, a webinar with experts, and Twitter chats, were provided to equip both health professionals and individuals with strategies to combat this harmful stigma.
