ADEA microcredentials- Foundations of Health and Wellness Coaching for Diabetes Educators-

In this microcredential, you’ll explore why traditional expert-led approaches may be less effective in supporting people with diabetes to make sustainable lifestyle changes. You’ll gain an understanding of what health and wellness coaching is, how it differs from other coaching styles, and how it can be used to empower more person-centred, collaborative care. The module introduces key definitions of coaching and wellness, showing how these concepts work together to support behaviour change. You’ll also learn the core principles that underpin health and wellness coaching and how they can be applied to improve client outcomes.

This microcredential explores how Health and Wellness Coaching can support people to self-manage diabetes by building motivation, confidence, and autonomy. You’ll develop foundational coaching skills underpinned by positive psychology and learn how to apply them in a diabetes care context. The module also covers strategies to build a health vision with clients, assess readiness for change, and strengthen self-efficacy. You’ll gain practical tools for ethical coaching, including action planning and goal setting.

In this micro-credential it introduces how Health and Wellness Coaching can enhance your role by empowering clients to take greater ownership of their diabetes self-management. You’ll build essential coaching skills grounded in positive psychology to support more meaningful, client-centred interactions. The course will guide you in helping clients create a clear health vision, assess their readiness for change, and build self-efficacy to sustain long-term improvements. You’ll also learn how to facilitate ethical coaching conversations that incorporate action planning and goal setting to drive practical, achievable outcomes.

In this microcredential, you will build on your understanding of vision-setting, readiness for change, and self-efficacy by focusing on how to turn insight into meaningful action. You’ll learn how to support clients in developing realistic, behaviour-based action plans that align with their readiness and confidence levels. The course covers the use of SMART goals, the difference between behavioural and outcome goals, and techniques for helping clients reframe their intentions into achievable steps. Additionally, you will explore key ethical considerations in health and wellness coaching, including maintaining professional boundaries, ensuring confidentiality, and understanding your scope of practice.

  • How to use the Stages of Change model to identify where clients are in their readiness to adopt new habits

  • Strategies to build self-efficacy and encourage individuals to take ownership of their lifestyle choices

  • SMART goal-setting techniques to support clients in planning achievable actions

  • Practical coaching strategies to help individuals overcome barriers and find realistic pathways forward

You’ll also strengthen key CDE competency domains, including person-centred care, communication and critical reflection.

Study Pathway to formal Health and Wellness Coaching Certification

Completion of the 4-part series provides ‘recognition of prior learning’ for the first Foundation Coaching unit in Wellness Coaching Australia’s larger certification course, which would provide formal accreditation with the Health Coaches Australia and New Zealand Association (HCANZA).
