10 April 2025—The vital role of credentialled diabetes educators (CDEs) and the urgent need for better access to their services were highlighted on ABC Radio on 9 April, in a segment featuring ADEA CEO Susan Davidson and NRL Hall of Famer Steve Renouf. Ms Davidson explained the complex demands of diabetes self-management, with up to 180 decisions a day, and advocated for five additional subsidised educator visits per year, citing a $16 saving for every $1 invested. She also highlighted the importance of personalised care and education in improving long-term health outcomes and reducing pressure on the healthcare system. Mr Renouf, diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at 22, shared how support from CDEs helped him manage his football career and later support his family—with all five of his children also living with type 1 diabetes. He also spoke about the early signs they observed and addressed the misconceptions and stigma surrounding type 1 diabetes in children. This national coverage reinforces the value of CDEs and supports ADEA’s advocacy for equitable diabetes care across Australia. 🎧 Listen to the 10-minute segment from around 44 minutes and 25 seconds on the ABC Radio website.
