This National Diabetes Week (13 to 19 July), the Australian Diabetes Educators Association (ADEA) is highlighting the importance of ensuring all Australians living with diabetes have equitable access to quality care and support, no matter where they live or who they are.

More than 300 Australians are diagnosed with diabetes every day, and an estimated two million Australians are now living with the condition, according to Diabetes Australia’s State of the Nation 2024 report.

ADEA's Better Access Equals Better Care campaign offers practical policy solutions aimed at creating a healthier future for everyone, reflecting the goal of Diabetes Australia's National Diabetes Week.

Both organisations share the vision of preventing diabetes where possible, reducing complications, and making diabetes support accessible for every Australian living with the condition.

"This week is a powerful reminder that we cannot talk about a healthier future without talking about improving access," ADEA Acting CEO Melanie Morris said.

"Our campaign is about turning those goals into action, making sure people in every part of Australia can see a Credentialled Diabetes Educator (CDE), access vital technology, and reduce the risk of diabetes-related complications."

CDEs play a significant role in helping people manage diabetes, reduce the risk of complications, and improve quality of life.

However, many Australians cannot access CDE services because of gaps in Medicare coverage and workforce shortages.

ADEA is calling for the following:

  • Expanded Medicare coverage

  • Funding for multidisciplinary diabetes care teams

  • Greater access to CDEs and allied health professionals

  • Harnessing technology to deliver CDE care to every corner of Australia
