The Australian Diabetes Educators Association (ADEA) has announced Dr Virginia Hagger as the recipient of the 2025 Honorary Life Membership Award, its most prestigious honour.
The award, which is the highest recognition bestowed by the ADEA Board, was presented on 21 August at the Australasian Diabetes Congress (ADC) at the Gold Coast Exhibition and Convention Centre.
Each year, only one Credentialled Diabetes Educator (CDE) is selected to recognise their significant and outstanding contribution to diabetes education and the CDE profession.
Dr Hagger was nominated for her exceptional leadership and outstanding contribution to diabetes care and education, the CDE profession, and the education of health professionals.
She has extensive experience in clinical care, management, and research related to the education and care of people living with diabetes.
Reflecting on the award, Dr Hagger thanked ADEA and the people who nominated her for this prestigious award.
"It's a great honour and I really appreciate it," she said.
"For about 38 years, I've been working in diabetes education and have been an ADEA member for that time.
"I've had an amazing career; it's been a wonderful career in diabetes education.
"I've had so many opportunities to do so many amazing things in the area and I hope they've made a difference."
Dr Hagger acknowledged her colleagues, friends, mentors, and supervisors who "have helped me on that journey and without whom I couldn't have done all the things I have achieved".
"So, thank you," she said.
ADEA congratulates Dr Hagger on this well-deserved recognition of her lifelong dedication to advancing diabetes education and care in Australia.
