- A medical specialist
- A hospital discharge planner
- Another diabetes educator with a current referral
Referrals remain active for 12 months from the date of referral. Referral dates cannot overlap from one 12 month period to the next. An ongoing referral can only be provided in certain circumstances.

Becoming a provider for Australian veterans
All information is available on the DVA website.
Maintaining your credentialling status
Medicare Australia and the DVA consider the Australian Diabetes Educators Association (ADEA) as the regulatory body for CDEs. The ADEA expects all CDEs to participate in the Re-Credentialling Program and lodge applications for re-credentialling according to instructions on the Recredentialling page. All CDEs who have been granted CDE status as a membership benefit must maintain a financial full ADEA membership. Please be aware that ADEA reports all practitioners with lapsed CDE status to Medicare, including those due to non-financial membership, within one (1) month which results in loss of provider status.

The ADEA recommends that CDEs join the Private Practice Special Interest Group (PP SIG) to network and exchange information with peers who also provide diabetes education consultations to through DVA.
