ADEA President Tracy Aylen, Minister for Health Sussan Ley and ADEA CEO Joanne Ramadge, at the launch of the ADEA Research Foundation.

The ADEA Research Foundation’s activities will provide people living with diabetes, their families and carers, with evidence-based education and care to create new knowledge, support people with diabetes and improve quality of life and economic outcomes.

Professor Trisha Dunning, Chair of the Research Foundation, said ‘the Foundation will involve collaborations between people who live with diabetes and their care teams in research activities to ensure the research addresses the issues that concern people with diabetes.’

‘I am pleased that the Research Foundation was formed,’ said Eleanor Kerdo, who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 11. ‘My experience with diabetes educators when I was first diagnosed instilled a positive sense of self-management and they really empowered me to live well every day.’

Eleanor Kedro spoke about her experience with a Credentialled Diabetes Educator and the importance of research and consumer engagement in diabetes and diabetes education.

How can you help?

People living with diabetes and their care teams can start talking about the issues they’d like to see researched and solved to make living with diabetes easier. Researchers can start forming research teams with consumers and clinicians. Business and the wider community can think about sponsoring a grant or scholarship – possibly a named grant to address a particular issue or support a particular community. Donate now!
