4 April 2025—ADEA has welcomed a new article published in the National Indigenous Times that highlights the critical role of Credentialled Diabetes Educators (CDEs) in supporting Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples living with diabetes.
The feature, The Pearl pushes for better access to diabetes care for Indigenous people, profiles Gunggari and Gubbi Gubbi man and rugby league great Steve Renouf, who draws on his lived experience with type 1 diabetes to call for more equitable access to diabetes education and culturally safe care.
The article includes commentary from ADEA CEO Susan Davidson and CDE Laura Zimmerman and reinforces ADEA’s ongoing work to grow the number of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander CDEs, expand culturally safe services, and raise awareness of how to access diabetes education across Australia.
The story strongly aligns with ADEA’s national advocacy campaign, Better Access Equals Better Care, which aims to unite communities across Australia to champion equitable access to diabetes care, no matter where they live or who they are.
