CovidSafe Guideline: recommended practice for CDEs in private practice

CovidSafe Guidelines for CDEs

Vaccination for CDEs

As people with diabetes are at higher risk of COVID-19 and associated  complications, ADEA’s position is that every person living with diabetes should get the first available vaccine as soon as they are eligible. This increased risk and our position on vaccines for people with diabetes, means that we advise that each CDE follow the advice and recommendation of the Chief Medical Officer, in consultation with their personal doctor, and if they are able, receive the full course of the recommended coronavirus vaccine.

Ensuring the safety of your clients

  • Have the official QR code at your practice and ensure every client signs in.
  • If you choose to see unvaccinated clients in person, ensure you are wearing the high-risk PPE as recommended by your state/territory. Some are choosing to see unvaccinated clients only on certain days/times to limit exposure to their vaccinated and/or higher risk clients. Consider which model works best for your practice.
  • Wear appropriate PPE while you see your clients, check your state or territory guidelines for details. ADEA recommends that you always wear a mask.
  • Follow recommended density guidelines and provide guidance to your clients (e.g. consider removing chairs or spacing them out appropriately).
  • Ensure any adult accompanying the client check in and confirm their vaccination status.
  • Limiting risk in your practice is essential to ensure the safety of your clients. It is also prudent to consider the ramifications if your practice is deemed an exposure site (appointments lost due to isolation, staff unable to work, etc) and have a plan in place.
