Changes to the Credentialling Program for 2015
The 2015 changes to the ADEA credentialling and re-credentialling program have been approved by the ADEA Board. These changes have come about after Trisha Dunning’s 2010 review of the credentialling program and the subsequent 2012-2013 CPD Portfolio Pilot Program.
Presentations have been provided at State Branch meetings and the ADS-ADEA ASM. The presentations are now available for viewing by clicking on the links below.

As part of the introduction to members of the new CPD portfolio requirements, the Credentialling Sub Committee have developed resources to assist members in the use of the new CPD portfolio templates.
Overall, the changes to the credentialling program include:
- A move to one annual payment date for CDEs, with the alignment of membership renewal dates and CDE renewal dates, therefore Credentialling renewal will become annual an the anniversary of ADEA membership dates.
- A revamped CPD portfolio template, providing application of learning goals, reflective practice and diabetes specific CPD activities depending on diabetes educators role and scope of practice. The total number of required CPD hours will be reduced to 20 hours per year, but will need to be diabetes specific.
- A reduction in the requirement of practice hours in diabetes education for initial credentialing to 1000 hours within the four years prior to initial credentialing application. Hours will not be able to be accrued until the commencement of an ADEA accredited diabetes education graduate certificate. Applicants will also have to have at least 2 years experience in their primary health discipline.
- A revamped Mentoring Program including on-line learning modules and electronic forms. Eligible mentoring partnerships will need to be completed within the 12 months prior to initial credentialling application. All registration forms, partnership completion forms and evaluation forms will need to be submitted before the partnership will be accepted for the credentialling application. The evaluation forms are being reviewed to ensure data collected is effective in the ongoing monitoring and improving of the mentoring program in the future.
The planning for the implementation of the changes and the on-line credentialling and re-credentialling process is now well underway and the implementation plan, time-line and communication strategy is being regularly reviewed.
The on-line credentialling platform will allow all forms to be electronically completed and submitted. It will also allow on-line payment processing.
